Artist's Notes for Doesn't Really Matter:
Written for a songwriting exercise with the challenge of writing in the style of another songwriter, artist or band chosen at random. That process pushed me to write melodies, key changes, and quirky lyrics that I would not have chosen without the prompt. Who does it sound like to you? What came out was an enthusiastic anthem encouraging people to get out of their own way, make mistakes, and play.

Lyrics

Doesn't Really Matter

Do a dance, stand on your head
Belt out a note, just don’t play dead!
You may find when you think you’re wrong
Others start to sing along (sing along)

You’re headed in a direction – the light is green
Strut proud and you will be seen
Look both ways and then lead the world
Keep on stumblin’ ahead and soon you will find
You’re the one who’s sane and everyone else lost their mind

No, don’t get me wrong, so your note’s a little flatter
So what? [what!] you might as well just play, ‘cause it doesn’t really matter
Hold up [up!], just take some time when your thoughts start to scatter
Don’t stop [stop!], might as well just live like it doesn’t really matter

It might be something you don’t want to do
It might be something right in front of you
It might occur to you crossin’ the street
But look at the light, not down at your feet

You’re headed in a direction – the light is red
Stand up in a rage, ‘til the rage is fed
Raise a fist that says you’ll change the world
Keep a level head and soon you will find
You’re the one who’s sane and everyone else lost their mind

No, don’t get me wrong, so your note’s a little flatter
So what? [what!] you might as well just play, ‘cause it doesn’t really matter
Hold up [up!], just take some time when your thoughts start to scatter
Don’t stop [stop!], might as well just live like it doesn’t really matter

Might as well just live like it doesn’t really matter
Might as well just live ‘cause it doesn’t really matter
